The final section of the tallest piece of freestanding public art in the UK has been put into place. Aspire, a 197ft (60m) steel tube, stands over the University of Nottingham's Jubilee campus. The sculpture is thought to be three times the height of the Angel of the North and 8m (26ft) taller than Nelson's Column. Constructed at Watson Steel Structures in Bolton, it was then transported to Widnes, Cheshire, where MCL have applied the unusual paint system to the sections. The designers wanted a very dark, deep red colour at the base of the structure, which gradually faded up to a bright orange colour at the top. The Aspire sculpture is designed to represent a limitless ambition brought about by commitment to education and MCL are delighted to be involved in such a worthwhile project.
