Passive Fire Protection (PFP) is an integral component of the three components of structural fire
protection and fire safety in a building. PFP contains a fire or slows the spread through a building,
through the use of fire resistant walls, floors and doors, known as “compartmentalisation”.
PFP can also protect the actual structure of the building by slowing the structural steel from
reaching its critical temperature of around 540oC, and therefore greatly reducing the possibility
of failure and ultimately the possibility of the building collapsing.
MCL Can offer the following Passive Fire Protection services in addition to our off-site and
on-site shot-blasting and industrial coatings services.
Merseyside Coatings works with the best manufacturers of board and spray systems, fire
stopping systems and maintains the skills of our employees to a high standard in order to
ensure that only the highest quality passive fire protection systems are installed to your building.
Fire Protection to Structural Steel
Up to 4 hours of fire protection using a high density mineral wool slab. This offers an element
of water resistance as well as having some acoustic insulation benefit.
Fire Walls, Boarding and Cladding
MCL can apply boarding or cladding to any exterior or interior partition or compartment walls
to increase its fire protection.
Fire Stopping
Fire Stopping is a passive fire protection system used to seal openings and joints in
floor/wall assemblies. Perhaps where pipes or cable trays pass through an opening in the wall,
MCL will fill the gaps around the opening to restore the fire resistance ratings to the wall or floor.
Intumescent Coatings
Intumescent Coatings are normally applied off-site at our facility during the other coating
system application before going to site for erection. We have our on-site division that can carry
out touch up repairs as well as full refurbishment contracts specifically at site.
